Pedro Linares
Role:
Client:
Pedro Linares was a cartonería artist born in Mexico city. His father worked as a cartonero and he trained him to follow his footsteps. By the time he was 12 years old, he had become a skilled craftsman of papier maché items like piñatas, calavers and Judas.
In his mid thirties, he became very sick and as Linares tells the story, in a feverish dream he encountered fantastical creatures who shouted the phrase “Alebrijes!”. After his recovery he started to sculpt these mythical beings. At the beginning the jarring scultptures met little success, until over time, Linares refined them into the colorful creatures recognized today in Mexican folk art.
As getting to know Pedro Linares story, I felt very driven to create a personal project about him to make his achievements visible and to continue honoring his creations.
This project was made during the Character Design course with @esthermoralesart at @warriorartcamp. I had so much fun working on this character and learning from the best @esthermoralesart Thanks for making this one of the best learning experiences ever!
